Supervision: Action-Based Cognitive Remediation Training

Keywords: Action-Based Cognitive Remediation (ABCR), Clinical Supervision, Psychosis, Implementation Science.

SUPERVISION DESCRIPTION

Clinical supervision is the essential second step toward achieving full ABCR Therapist Certification. This module bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world clinical application, giving therapists direct access to experts who support the successful implementation of ABCR within their own service settings.

Through interactive sessions, supervisees receive tailored guidance to ensure clinical relevance, accuracy, and ethical delivery of the intervention.

Your tailored supervision sessions may include:

  • Implementation Planning: Expert support in structuring your first in-person or virtual cohort, from goal setting to real-world simulation planning.
  • Practical Skill Development: Refinement of core techniques such as cognitive activation, strategy monitoring, and managing difficult group dynamics.
  • Case Consultation & Troubleshooting: Discussion of specific participant needs and navigation of clinical challenges that arise during group or individual sessions.
  • Fidelity & Feedback: Guidance on adhering to evidence-based protocols while adapting to diverse clinical contexts.

WHY SUPERVISION MATTERS

While the online certification provides the foundational “how-to,” supervision ensures you can deliver ABCR with confidence and competence.

  • Professional Support: You will be matched with an experienced supervisor from the CRISP research group or Dr. Chris Bowie’s team, ensuring you learn from international experts in the field.
  • Therapist Certification: A minimum of six (6) supervision sessions* is required to be eligible for the ABCR Therapist Certification.
    • Competency Assessment: Your supervisor retains the discretion to determine when competency has been achieved, ensuring high standards of care for your clients.*

REQUIREMENTS

  • Prerequisite: You must be currently enrolled in or have completed the E-Cog ABCR Online Certification.
  • Technical: A computer with a stable internet connection and access to Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
  • Attendance Policy: A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations are subject to non-refundable session fees.
  • Professional Standing: For OPQ members, sessions with licensed psychologists may count toward continuing education hours, subject to prior agreement between the supervisor and supervisee.

FORMAT & DURATION

  • Duration: Sessions are typically 1 hour long.
  • Format: Supervision may be delivered in groups (up to 4 therapists from the same team) or individually.
  • Validity: Individual sessions must be used within 6 months of purchase. Session packages must be activated within 1 year of purchase and completed within 6 months of the first session.

ASSESSMENT

Unlike the online modules, this stage is assessed through clinical competency. Your supervisor will evaluate your ability to:

  • Effectively apply ABCR techniques in practice.
  • Maintain treatment fidelity while adapting to participant needs.
  • Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct during intervention delivery.
