MODULE DESCRIPTION

The aim of this training is to prepare you to lead group MCT for psychosis.

After completing the training, you will

  • Be familiar with the empirical findings regarding the effectiveness of MCT,
  • Know the content and background of MCT,
  • Be familiar with typical cognitive biases/distortions in psychosis and know how to address them in group MCT,
  • Be familiar with the various types of exercises that are used in group MCT,
  • Know how to facilitate group MCT,
  • Know various strategies for dealing with comorbid problems (e.g. depression, low self-esteem), and
  • Know how to deal with difficult therapeutic situations.

Important: This training is intended to help you get started as an MCT facilitator and does not replace extensive study of the manual.

The manual additionally contains a detailed description of the modules and exercises, and it serves as preparation for the sessions.

This module is the third requirement in the Metacognitive Training Certification for Psychosis.

PREREQUISITES

You are required to complete the Cognitive Health and Digital Health Technologies modules before enrolling in this module.

ASSESSMENT

This module requires a score of 80% or above in the final assessment for completion.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Name definitions, theoretical bases and scientific evidence of MCT efficacy
  • Explain mechanisms of MCT action
  • Explain the structure and content of the MCT intervention
  • Situate roles and responsibilities of implementers
  • Plan sessions
  • Demonstrate specific interventional techniques for MCT (psychoeducation, strategy teaching, biases demonstrations, critical thinking)
  • Develop strategies to deal with obstacles and difficult therapeutic situations
  • Critique strengths and limitations of MCT
  • List online resources for practitioners and patients

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Understand MCT definition, theoretical basis and scientific evidence of efficacy.
  • Understand MCT mechanisms of action
  • Understand structure and content of MCT intervention
  • Awareness of roles and responsibilities of implementers
  • Ability to plan sessions, apply specific intervention techniques for MCT and complementary techniques to promote cognitive health
